My stupid question of the day
« on: February 24, 2010, 01:49:46 PM »
Some of the terms used kinda go over my head a bit so I'm gonna ask about them. Today's word is "Vector". I've seen it all over the site. No idea what it actually is/means/does.
Gimper dudes and dudettes, please enlighten me and show me the way of the Vector  ;) * sits in yoga position of mat* ooohhhmmm

vector is the opposite of pixels, or raster. programs like photoshop and the gimp are raster-based, illustrator and inkscape are vector. i think vectors are based on shape instead of pixels, so you can resize vecs without losing quality.

hope that helped :)

vector graphics are stored as mathematical formulae.  when you zoom in the edges stay sharp.  this is opposed to "raster" images which are stored as pixels.  when you zoom in the edges become choppy.

gimp is a raster program like photoshop.  inkscape is an open source vector program like illustrator.

ok if you went into Gimp and made a circle... it looks all smooth right? Well, zoom in.. see them squares? Raster images are made up of wee little squares. Because of that they will lose quality if you resize them. Vector images don't.

For example...

If I made a logo for the Dome in Gimp. I make it 400 pixels by 400 pixels (pixels are them wee squares)... but then, I want the logo on a big sign.. and I need the logo to be about 2 feet x 2 feet... I think you see the problem.

With a vector, I can scale the logo from 1 pixel to something to fit the SkyDome and it will be the same quality.

There's no worse feeling than that millisecond you're sure you are going to die after leaning your chair back a little too far.

Ok getting the idea now. Vector thing is smoother. Can I make these vector things using Gimp?

Skydome? Do you mean the stadium formerly known as Skydome?  Now referred to by dull and unoriginally renamed Rogers Centre?  I think I know where Darth is     Long live the name of Skydome

Ok I may try that soon, For the moment I'll stick to the Gimp and try to improve on that.... and try to figure out that Apophysis  fractal thing too lol

Cool, London's not that far from here.
Luna, originally from Toronto, now in the farmlands surrounding Cambridge Ont. Only a few miles from African Lion Safari too. I got a cow farm and deer farm for neighbours  :) mmm beef and venison
