Sorry for being uber inactive ='(
Crash CourseHello and welcome to my third tutorial. After reading this tutorial, you should be getting something like this:
newbielink:http://upload.kinstry.co.uk/users/public/w8201planetp6.xcf
[nonactive]ONTO THE TUTORIAL1) First of all, go to Google and search for anything random. I searched “Planet collision"(Pretty random eh?). Once you have found yourself a nice looking picture, place it in a new canvas. My size was 360x150 (As do most of my signatures are). If the picture you want is too big, simply go Layer>Scale Layer after pasting it. Once you’re done resizing and whatnot, anchor it (Ctrl+H, or if you click outside of the selection) on your Background Layer
2) Go Ctrl+L to open up your Layers Dialogue.
Click the New Layer Button. When something pops up, pick Transparency and just click Ok from now on. On this new layer, use your Brush Tool
, pick the default Sparks Brush and brush the new layer completely (Some people might know what’s coming already) Go Filters>Map>Displace. Adjust the X and Y displacement to a high number. While you’re adjusting the X and Y, try and add flow. If you’re satisfied, pick smear and click Ok. Hide the layer by clicking the eye next to it in the Layers Dialogue.
I don’t think we need a screenshot here, do you
3) Make a new layer and go Edit>Copy Visible, paste it and anchor it in. Go Filters>Distorts>Iwarp. To actually use the Iwarp filter, you should see the current layer you have on the top left corner. Click and drag in that little screen while you play around with the Deform Modes and settings at the right
Once you’re done with the Iwarp, click ok and set the Blending Mode (It’s in your Layers Dialogue, at the top where it says Mode) to Lighten Only
Note: If you see some green lines after setting the Layer mode to Lighten Only, go to newbielink:http://gimp.org/
[nonactive] and download the latest Gimp version.
4) Make a new layer go Edit>Copy Visible, and paste it, DON’T ANCHOR IT. Pick a colour using your Colour Picker Tool
around the top right. Now delete it in your Layers Dialogue. In the layer you made at the beginning of this step, brush using a Circle Fizzy Brush where you want to sort of ‘blend’ it. Set the Layer Mode to Darken Only.
5) Make a new layer. Go Edit>Copy Visible and paste it, anchor it from now on. Pick two random colours to be your Background Colour and your Foreground Colour
I used cb0204, a shade of red, and 682b54 a shade of Purple(What’s the difference with Violet anyways O_o) Go Filters>Colours>Map>Gradient Map. Set the blending mode to Overlay.
6)Make a new layer, Edit>Copy Visible and paste. Now we’ll have a use for the Sparks layer. Go Filters>Map>Displace. Pick the Sparks layer on both X and Y displacement. Change the settings if you want to, it’s not necessary though. Set the blending mode to Soft Light at around 50%
7) Decide whether you think your signature is on the bright side, on the dark side, or its fine with you. If it’s fine with you, skip this step. Make a new layer Edit>Copy Visible, and paste. Go Layers>Colours>Brightness-Contrast. Play around with the setting until you’re satisfied. Set the blending mode to Normal at 20%
Go Edit>Copy Visible. Paste it on a new layer. Now go Filters>Artistic>Gimpressionist. When something pops up, find something the says Cubism. Select it then click Apply. Don’t click ok yet though… Go to the Brush tab
Pick a Spunge brush. Now click ok. Set the layer to Soft Light at around 28%
9) Make a new layer. Edit>Copy Visible and paste (You’re probably tired of this, but you get used to it, there’s still quite a bit more >=P). Go Filters>Noise>Pick. Change the Randomization and Repeat lower than 30. Click ok. Set the Layer to Lighten Only at around 40%
10) Edit>Copy Visible, and paste it on a new layer. Go Filters>Blur>Gaussian Blur. You can change the settings if you want, but the default settings are fine. Set the layer to Lighten Only. It looks shiny @_@
11) Now, make a new layer. Edit>Copy Visible. Go Filters>Enhance>Sharpen. Play around with the setting until you get what you prefer. Set this layer to Lighten Only at 40%
12) This time, we’re not going to Copy Visible thing (O.M.G.) Instead, duplicate your Background Layer. Drag the duplicated layer to the top most. Go Filters>Map>Displace. Keep the settings like the last time you used it in one of the previous steps. Set it to Soft Light at about 50%
13) Edit>Copy Visible and paste on a new layer. Pick a Circle Fuzzy Brush and double click on the Dodge and Burn Tool. Make sure the type is set to Dodge. Find out where your lighting seems to be coming from. Once you’ve found it, click and drag your mouse around that area. You should find that that area is now a bit lighter than before. Continuously do this until you’re satisfied. Change the opacity to 20%
14) Edit>Copy Visible. Set your BG and FG to black and white By clicking the tiny icon below the two colours you’re currently using
Then go Filters>Colours>Map>Gradient Map. Set it to colour at about 20%
15) I thought it was a bit bright still.. Soo, make a new layer. Using your Paintbucket Tool
fill it with black. Set this layer to Overlay at about 20%
16) Nearly done now… Edit>Copy Visible and make a new layer to paste it on. Go Filters>Blur>Gaussian Blur. You can keep the same settings if you want. Set this to Colour at 30%
17) Guess what? These are the last times you’ll be reading Copy Visible in this tutorial!! Edit>Copy Visible. Pick two colours. I used cf0000, a shade of Red, and 7a0085 a shade of Purple/Violet Set this to Colour at 20%
18) Finally, add anything you want, borders, text, adjustment layers, etc.
